What do Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Alice In Wonderland, Peter Pan, Dracula, Bilbo Baggins, Luke Skywalker, Robin Hood, and Frankenstein all have in common? These are all characters who are such a dynamic part of the human experience they make an impact even on people who never read or watch their stories. In this class we will delve deep into character development and discover what gives a Captivating Character the power to change the world.
In Captivating Characters, we will study some of the greatest characters created from fiction and film, discover the key components in developing a character worth following, look at the different types of characters involved in a story, and discover how to weave a legendary tale filled with complex characters. The class will be filled with discussions, readings, presentations, and LOTS of writing. From character loglines, how to choose the right name, virtue and vice, picking a theme song for each character, character archetypes, personality questionnaires, and much more, students will complete this class with the confidence they need to successfully create captivating characters.
By the end of this class, students will have developed and written a complete story for each of their characters, constructed a compelling character arc, and travelled on adventures with these characters in legendary lands discovering the power of the captivating character.
I utilize Google Classroom for all assignments, communications, online discussions, and updates so students will need a personal gmail account. This makes it easy to refer to for homeschool teacher meetings, assignment details, due dates, and grades.
