Day & Time: Thursday 1:45-2:55
Mentor: Sarah Bailey
This will be an immersion learning class where students learn to stand up for their own values in a respectful manner; to become a leader and work with others. The students will study arguments, biases and fallacies; how they are used in the media to sway our opinions and we will learn how to evaluate them. This will be accomplished by: studying what an argument is, how to recognize a fallacy and students will bring in articles on current events from both sides of the debate. We will discuss many current events, evaluate their arguments and conclusions and how we can defend ourselves while being able to listen to others who think differently.
We will study how to master our emotions, and practice this at home. Each student will need their own copy of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. There is a test at the back of the book that can only be used by one person, so make sure to buy a new copy of the book.
The students will decide the subjects we discuss in class; some of the ideas that I have come up with are:
1. Health Care
3. Global Climate Change
4. Religious Freedom
5. True Constitution vs. living document
6. Social Media
7. Different forms of Education
All classes are full year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
