Day & Time: Thursday 9:00-10:10
Mentor: Angie Gardner aka Frizzle
This class is to help students learn through a cycle of action and reflection as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and a deeper understanding and skills for themselves. Service Learning Projects will enrich the student learning experience, teach civic and social responsibility and strengthen communities.
Each student will develop a service learning project for our class and Love of Learning community to take part in.
- Critical thinking
- Problem solving
- Communication Skills
These different learning objectives are built into the five stages of service-learning, which include:
Investigate – Learners understand that investigating the needs of the community makes service effective
Preparation and Planning – Learners understand that preparation and planning ensure that the goals and needs are met
Action – Learners understand that implementing a plan of action generates change and results
Reflection - Learners understand that reflection is ongoing, prompting deep thinking and analysis about themselves and their relationship to society
Demonstration/Communication – Learners recognize that through demonstration and communication they solidify their understanding and evoke a response from others.
Throughout the five stages of their service-learning project, students are challenged to expand their thinking of the world around them, which leads to personal growth. The skills learnt in each stage of the service-learning project creates opportunities for personal growth in terms of how students think and act. This fosters passion and empathy, helping students understand diversity and the challenges that others are going through and how to find solutions to them.
I utilize Google Classroom for all assignments, communications, online discussions, and updates so students will need a personal gmail account. This makes it easy to refer to for homeschool teacher meetings, assignment details, due dates, and grades.
