American Sign Language (ASL) – Beginner
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL). Students will learn basic vocabulary, fingerspelling, common phrases, and simple grammatical structures. The course will also include an introduction to Deaf culture and the importance of visual and nonverbal communication. Instruction will focus on building foundational skills through guided practice, repetition, and interactive activities.
Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate using basic ASL vocabulary and phrases, confidently fingerspell, and understand simple signed conversations. Students will develop stronger visual attention skills, improve their ability to communicate without spoken language, and gain an appreciation for Deaf culture. Students are expected to participate actively, practice consistently, and show respect for the language and community.
Class Activities:
Students will engage in partner practice, group activities, visual demonstrations, signing exercises, and occasional review activities. Practice outside of class may be encouraged to build fluency and retention.
Materials:
No materials are required.
All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
