IEW: Adventures in Writing
This course uses the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) “Structure and Style” method to build strong foundational writing skills. Students will work through the first 7 Units of the IEW Structure and Style system, along with stylistic techniques using the EZ+1 principle. Instruction will focus on helping students organize their thoughts, develop clear paragraphs, and gain confidence in written expression.
Students will complete weekly writing assignments ranging from one to five paragraphs. Assignments will be started in class and finished at home, with completed work due at the beginning of the next class. Parents should expect to support students with editing and time management throughout the week.
Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to write organized paragraphs with increasing clarity, structure, and detail. Students will develop stronger writing habits, improve sentence and paragraph construction, and build confidence in expressing ideas in writing. Students are expected to complete weekly assignments and participate actively in class instruction.
Class Activities:
Guided writing instruction, weekly paragraph assignments, stylistic technique practice, and structured writing exercises completed both in class and at home.
Materials:
Required materials include the IEW Adventures in Writing Student Book ($35), a 1-inch binder with lined paper (no spiral-bound notebooks), blue or black ink pens, and a yellow highlighter. Weekly homework is required for this class.
Prerequisite:
Students must be able to write multiple sentences.
All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
