IEW: Journeys in Writing

This course uses the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) “Structure and Style” method to develop strong writing skills. Students will work through all 9 Units of the IEW Structure and Style system, along with stylistic techniques using the EZ+1 principle. Instruction will focus on building clear, organized writing while gradually increasing complexity and independence.

Students will complete weekly writing assignments ranging from one to five paragraphs. These assignments will be started during class and completed at home throughout the week, with finished work due at the beginning of each class.

Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to write clear, structured paragraphs with improved organization, style, and confidence. Students are expected to complete weekly writing assignments on time, apply learned techniques, and demonstrate steady growth in writing independence and quality.

Class Activities:
Weekly writing assignments, structured paragraph development, stylistic technique practice, and guided editing with parent support at home.

Materials:
Required materials include the IEW Journeys in Writing Student Book ($35), a 1-inch binder with lined paper, blue or black ink pens, and a yellow highlighter (used weekly). Homework is required for this class.

Prerequisite:

Students must be able to write a complete paragraph.

All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
