IEW: University Ready Writing (Video-Based)
This course uses the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) “Structure and Style” method to prepare students for college-level writing. Through video instruction, students will learn effective note-taking strategies, how to write précis (summaries), essays, and on-demand responses ranging from one paragraph to several pages. Instruction also includes writing abstracts, organizing and developing content, citing sources, applying style guidelines, and using literary devices to strengthen writing.
Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to produce organized, clear, and well-developed academic writing appropriate for university-level expectations. Students will gain confidence in summarizing information, constructing essays, and responding to prompts under time constraints. Students are expected to complete weekly writing assignments, follow instructions carefully, and develop increasing independence in their writing process.
Class Activities:
Video-based instruction, note-taking practice, weekly writing assignments, summaries (précis), essays, and occasional on-demand writing tasks.
Materials:
Required materials include University-Ready Writing Binder & Student Packet ($25), binder fill paper (no spiral-bound notebooks), blue or black ink pens, and a yellow highlighter. Weekly homework is required for this class.
Prerequisite:
Students must be able to write a complete paragraph.
All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
