Greek and Latin Roots

A large portion of the English language stands on the foundations laid by the Greeks and Romans. And learning about these foundations will help students gain a greater understanding of what they speak and write.

Throughout this course, students will learn the etymology of words, use these words in sentences, and answer worksheet questions. Lessons may include games, word warm-ups, and brain breaks that play with language (such as tongue twisters, homophones, and puns).

Outcomes:

  • listen, speak, and write from Greek and Latin roots
  • learn vocabulary
  • build words from roots, prefixes, and suffixes
  • break words down into roots, prefixes, and suffixes
  • create sentences
  • learn the history of words
  • share what they have learned with the class

Students will participate and be helpful for their classmates, with the expectation students will be kind and cooperative.

Class Activities:

Homework may include researching a definition, writing sentences, answering questions on a worksheet, and getting information ready to present to the class.

Materials:

Bring a folder with paper (copy paper and lined paper), pencils (regular and colored.)

All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
