Legendary Lands
Good stories are complex webs of characters, their choices, and the resulting consequences. They also require a believable setting—the mystical and mysterious lands in which the characters reside—for the reader to get lost inside of. Designed to complement courses such as Captivating Characters, Drawing & Design Studio, and Folklore & Mythology, this class supports the creation of immersive worlds through storytelling, mythology, visual design, and creative writing.
Outcomes:
In Legendary Lands, the setting takes center stage and becomes a character all of its own. We will study some of the greatest lands created from fiction and film, ranging from Middle Earth to Narnia to Neverland. We’ll focus on what makes a believable world, and what components are needed to make a world feel alive.
Class Activities:
read (both fiction and essays about land/lore)
in-class discussions
write folktales, mythologies, and histories
create maps and other art pertaining to their world
By the end of the class, they will have developed an entire world of their own!
Materials:
All materials will be provided.
***This class is intended to be taken with Drawing and Design Studio, Folklore & Mythology, and Captivating Characters***
All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
