Linguistics: Language in Motion

Linguistics, or the study of language, transforms our natural knowledge into a deeper understanding of how language works in our lives. This knowledge unlocks critical thinking skills for exciting fields such as foreign language study, cognitive science, creative writing, computer science, teaching, translation/interpreting, deaf studies, and speech pathology.

Outcomes:

Through class discussions, videos, and group activities, we will explore the structure of language (e.g., phonology and syntax), child language development, animal communication, foreign languages, cultural influences, and more!

Class Activities:

Light reading and short homework assignments, (with optional challenges for advanced students), will reinforce concepts learned in class.

Materials:

  • bring a notebook, pencil, and textbook to class every week.
  • required textbook: The 5-Minute Linguist: Bite-Sized Essays on Language and Languages, 3rd Edition. (2024, C. Myrick, $12 used/ $26 new on Amazon).

All classes are full-year classes. Students enrolled in a Fall Semester class will automatically enroll for the Spring Semester in December to ensure their place in the class. Pricing is per semester.
